Stressed animals can be unpredictable
New Year is a difficult time for animals. Their hearing is much better than that of humans, so the sound of fireworks is scary for them. “Dogs and cats often panic, hide in tight spaces, shake, lose their appetite, and sometimes try to escape, which is dangerous for them. Birds hear explosions, fly in the middle of the night, and often run into obstacles. The noise caused by fireworks is also very stressful for forest animals, their behavior changes and they become unpredictable, which creates a danger in areas of human transport. road” – informs the city executive committee.
Officials remind us that New Year’s Eve is also an awkward time for animals in shelters and zoos. “Employees of the Antonina and Jan Żabinski municipal zoo and the Jan Lytynski Na Paluchu shelter worry about their health every year, as they may behave in response to unexpected noises and potentially pose a threat to themselves and other animals. Long-term stress lowers their immunity and makes them more resistant to diseases”, it was mentioned.

Pets must have a chip or ID
In the event of a frightened dog or cat escaping, it should be ensured that the animal has a chip or ID with the owner’s contact details. If an animal is lost, you can report it to the City Guard or Ecopatrol by calling the emergency number 986. The City Guard will take the found animal home or transfer it to the relevant institutions such as Na Paluchu Sanctuary, CITES center. and “Ptasi azil”, which work in the Warsaw zoo, as well as veterinary clinics.

Therefore, we encourage you to consider forms of celebration and support activities aimed at limiting the use of fireworks and crackers. Together, we can make Warsaw a friendlier place for all residents, including those with four legs or wings, adds councilor Renata Niewiecka.
Volunteers search for lost animals
On New Year’s Eve, volunteers plan to join the search for missing animals. The patrol is formed by volunteers from the Warsaw branch of the Polish Society for the Protection of Animals and the Special Animal Rescue Service. Animal shelter Na Palochui of the capital and Ecopatrol of the City Guard also joined this campaign.
– We really do what we always do, which is to help stray or injured animals, but we pay more attention to our presence in the field – said David Fabianski, president of SRS Animal Rescue, in an interview with PAP. He added that this year “animals” will own four cars, which will be at least two people.
Fabianski explained that the problem of missing animals is less in Warsaw or big cities with city guards and Ecopatrol, but the problem is in neighboring communes. – We will check the chip and find the owner, if the animal is injured, we will help and take it to the hospital, – he explained.
He stressed that if we know that our dog or cat is stressed by firecracker explosions, there is still time to go to the vet. You should also allow the animal to hide where it wants, close the windows and, for example, turn up the TV or radio. Pets are used to these sounds and don’t notice that it’s louder, which can distract them from hearing fireworks. You have to leave the dogs earlier.
Fabianski emphasized that it is very important that our dog’s chip is registered and that the information is current (especially the phone number) and not owned in the database.
He resorted to fireworks at midnight on New Year’s Eve, not a few hours earlier or later. – It takes about 10 minutes. This is a time when animals can live without problems, he added.
