Welcome to our live blog for Day 3 of the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2024. Things are getting more and more intriguing in Colombia as the opening round nears the midpoint.
Venezuela and Italy both picked up their first wins of the tournament today in their opening matches on Day 3 of the World Cup. Italy defeated Guam 13-1 in Barranquilla, while Venezuela defeated South Africa 11-1 in Cartagena. These wins move Italy and Venezuela into contention for a place in the Super Round. Nicaragua and South Africa finished their matches yesterday with Nicaragua winning 21-1 to remain unbeaten.
At 3 p.m., Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will face off in a tough match at Edgar Renteria Stadium, while Nicaragua and the Netherlands will clash in Cartagena. At 7 p.m., Japan will face host Colombia in Group A, while Mexico and Chinese Taipei will round out Group B in Cartagena. All games can be watched on WBSC's official streaming platform, GameTime.

Schedule and Results
Italy opened the day's game with a 13-1 victory over Guam in the fifth round at Edgar Renteria Stadium, earning their first win of the tournament. Italy hit 11 hits in the game.
Mattia Angelucci had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, 1 RBI and 2 runs, Patrick Silva had 2 hits in 2 at-bats, 2 RBI and Pablo Suarez scored 4 runs to lead Italy's attack.
Guam's Pierce Castro went 1-for-1 and scored the team's only run of the game, his first hit of the tournament.
Christian Tontini was the winning pitcher, pitching three innings, allowing one hit, one run, walking two and striking out five.
Italy currently has one win and two losses in Group A, with two games remaining to qualify for the Super Round.
Colombia is back in action at 7 p.m. to face superpower Japan in the third game of the opening round. Japan and Colombia last met in this age group two years ago, with the Asian team winning 7-4. Japan leads Group A with a 2-0 record, while Colombia is 1-1 after a tough overtime loss to Puerto Rico.
In Group B, Chinese Taipei and Mexico will meet in Cartagena in the 18th game of the match. The last time the teams met at this level, Chinese Taipei won 2-1 in a rain-shortened match in Hermosillo. Chinese Taipei won the group with two wins, while Mexico is now 1-1 after a close loss to the Netherlands last night.

Top of the 2nd – The Netherlands scored again in their second at-bat, when Raichelnon Ogenia walked with the bases loaded and the European team extended their lead to 2-0.
Top of the 1st – The Netherlands loaded the bases with two walks and a single, but could only score one run on a sacrifice fly to center field by Fran Jean Hazes. Nicaragua relief pitcher Diedrich Rodriguez (replacing starter Kevin Mesa) got out of the jam with consecutive flies to left field. The Netherlands led 1-0.

Bottom of the 4th – The Dominican Republic batting line came alive and scored three runs. A two-run RBI single by Euniel de la Cruz and a two-run single by Miguel Grullon gave the Dominican Republic the lead.
Top of the 4th – Adoniel Quiles and Bradley Rodriguez singled to start the inning and then scored on a grounder and a sacrifice fly to give Puerto Rico a 7-0 lead.
Top of the 2nd – Joseph Mendez tripled as leadoff hitter and Puerto Rico had a 3-run chance with 3 hits. A wild pitch, a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by Bradley Rodriguez gave the Boricua team a 5-0 lead.
Top of the 1st – Puerto Rico takes a 2-run lead. A walk and an error at the start of the inning put runners on base, and a ground ball and a wild pitch score two runs. Puerto Rico is leading 2-0 but has yet to get a hit.

PREVIEW – Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will face off in Barranquilla in a new version of this legendary baseball rivalry. However, this will be their first game at the U-15 Baseball World Cup. They last met this year in the final of the Americas Qualifier, with Puerto Rico winning 5-4 to claim the continental title. Puerto Rico is undefeated in the tournament, while the Dominican Republic is 1-1. The match kicks off at 3 p.m.

Preview – South Africa will face Venezuela at 10:30 in Cartagena de Indias. The two teams met in the last edition of this tournament, held in Hermosillo on 29 August 2022. Venezuela recorded an 11-1 victory in five innings against the African representative. Both teams will be looking for their first win after losing their first two matches.
