What we've learned about LSU's offense over the past few years is that it can be explosive in a few different ways, and in 2024 the Tigers will need to get creative with how they maintain their offensive excellence.
With just a week until the start of the new season, the 247Sports team looked at every offense in the SEC, compared them to the latest offenses and looked at the trends of each unit: Here's what the varsity team said about the trends of the LSU offense.
Five-year high school admission ranking: 4
2nd year transfer ranking: 20
2023 Offensive Rank (Pick Six Preview): 1
Upward or downward trend? DOWN
Not only was LSU ranked No. 1 in my offensive metrics last year, but the LSU offense finished as the highest-rated unit in the entire four-team playoff era in 2023. Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, two first-round receivers, and their coordinator are all gone, but they remain a top-25 unit based on their elite recruiting profile and my No. 3 offensive line in the country.
Geaux247's take: This may be a bit misleading. Going #1 in 2023 really can only go down when you factor in the productivity lost in the NFL Draft. Most people who cover and follow LSU closely understand that this offense can regress. You can easily make the argument that this offense is certainly trending “down” compared to last year. But as the 2024 season approaches, this version of LSU's offense that we've seen all offseason has been consistently executing at a pretty high level heading into the season opener against USC.
The overall belief is that even if the team doesn't come close to matching the historic 2023 season they had this season, it will still be a pretty good season. The Tigers have worked very hard this offseason to evolve this offense into one that suits not only the strengths of quarterback Garrett Nussmeyer, but also the strengths of their biggest strength, the offensive line. Let's take a closer look at how this offense can continue to be one of the best in the conference.
