The video game World of Warcraft has been going strong since its launch in 2004. For two decades, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game has thrilled gamers with new campaigns, stories and characters that deepen the lore of Azeroth.
World of Warcraft will launch its tenth expansion, The War Within, the first in a new trilogy called The Worldsoul Saga. Prices start at $49.99 for the base edition and it will be released on Monday, August 26th.
“The story begins with a mysterious threat facing the world of Azeroth itself,” World of Warcraft game director Ion Hazzikostas told Rolling Stone. “Dark dream visions and echoes experienced by heroes across the globe call them together. We soon learn that the living organism of the world – the Worldsoul – is threatened by a mysterious entity called Zarathath, a symbol of the dark powers of the void.”

World of Warcraft: The War Within is the start of a new trilogy: The Worldsoul Saga.
While “The War Within” is literally about the war within Azeroth, the title also has another meaning that points to the depth of World of Warcraft's characters.
“Our journey takes us underground to Azeroth to uncover the true nature of this threat and how we can stop it,” Haddikostas continues, “and we'll meet a range of new friends and foes. But as we go along, the title, The War Within, takes on many different meanings. Yes, it's an expansion where we literally go inside the world and fight the war within it, but it's also a journey of self-discovery.”
World of Warcraft may seem intimidating to those who have never played it before, with its deep lore, expansive world-building, and well-established characters, but once I started playing I found it to be truly immersive and easy to get into. One of the best things about the game is that it can be played at your own pace, so the more you become familiar with the controls and mechanics, the more you can sink into the rhythm of the game, explore new areas, and start building relationships with fellow gamers.
The War Within expansion marks the start of a new storyline and a new trilogy, so it's also a great time to pick up the game for those who've never played World of Warcraft before.
World of Warcraft: The War Within (via Battle.net) for PC will launch on Monday, August 26th at 6pm ET/3pm PST starting at $49.99, though if you buy the Epic Edition you'll get early access to the expansion ahead of its official release.
