There are currently several programs that allow you to host video conferences, some of which are free and available for limited use, while others are paid and intended for professional and regular use.
Below are the most commonly used platforms when we provide online interpretation for our clients' video conferences.
Such tools offer several features, such as split screen (picture-in-picture) and shared content transfer. They facilitate working from home (a 'home office') and, in some cases, can also use or create existing international networks. Of course, there is no need for the parties involved to change their location. However, in many cases we recommend using the help of an interpreter. This service is often referred to as online interpreting because it is provided via a virtual meeting room.
Convenient video conferencing tools enable hassle-free online interpretation
Our customers can use a variety of platforms such as Zoom Meetings and Microsoft Teams, each of which allows them to host virtual meetings in just a few steps or clicks of the mouse.
In addition to setting up video connections, these platforms often offer features such as split screen (image sectoring), chat rooms, and collaborative content publishing. This greatly facilitates interpretation and often results in significantly higher quality interpretations.
Uses two well-known platforms
Zoom meeting
Zoom Meetings is a video conferencing tool for business communications that allows you to host meetings with multiple participants and optional interpreters. This service is fast and flexible to use. The session administrator creates an invitation, which is sent to participants via email in the form of a link. Participants do not need to register on the Zoom website. It is enough to click on the link to enter the virtual meeting room.
Please note that in the free version, meeting time is limited to 40 minutes for two or more participants. Currently, there is no time limit for online meetings with only two participants.
As a result of this, we use the business version, which allows us to guarantee unlimited session duration to our customers.
microsoft team
This platform allows you to host video conferences and share real-time access to Office documents.
The Microsoft Teams program has a free benefit that allows you to host video conferences with 10 GB of file space per session. 2 GB additional users per team.
Here you can also split the screen (picture-in-picture mode), have collaborative sharing of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote files, and even use external applications.
Additional platforms from other providers are discussed below, but we do not use them for a variety of reasons.
skype
Skype has gained a certain amount of attention among the general public due to its provision of audio and video calls (personal AV transmission) and is available in a browser version. With a PC interface, the online messenger allows you to make free video calls. Access is free and all you need is access to the link to join the meeting. No registration is required here.
The Skype Business version (“Skype for Business”) is offered specifically to enterprises and is designed for business meetings in large environments.
This version focuses on the entrepreneurial sector and includes important features such as hosting meetings, exchanging information in real-time, and exchanging content during presentations with Office 365 Pro integration. Another feature of the business version is the ability to program meetings directly in your Outlook calendar.
