X-Press Feeders, the world's largest independent shipping operator, has announced the launch of its second green methanol-fueled route, the Green Baltic X-PRESS (GBX).
The new route is part of Europe's first scheduled feeder network powered by green methanol and follows the success of the Green Finland X-PRESS (GFX) in July.
The GBX route, scheduled to begin operations on August 23, will serve ports such as Rotterdam, Antwerp Brugge, Klaipeda and Riga. The expansion is made possible by the addition of a third dual-fuel vessel, the Eco-Umande, to X-Press Feeders' fleet.
X-Press Feeders, which operates more than 100 vessels, received the first of 14 dual-fuel vessels it ordered in May. The company expects to take delivery of all 14 by mid-2026. Each dual-fuel vessel will have a carrying capacity of 1,200 TEU and will have a length of 148 meters (LOA).
“Building on the momentum of our first green methanol-powered route, we are pleased to launch the Green Baltic X-PRESS and expand our green methanol-powered feeder network to provide more sustainable transportation options to our customers,” said Mr Francis Goh, Chief Operating Officer of X-Press Feeders.
The company's commitment to sustainability is evident in its choice of green methanol as fuel, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65% compared to traditional fuels. The green methanol used by X-Press Feeders is independently certified in Europe under the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification).
The initiative is in line with recent EU regulations aimed at reducing the shipping industry's environmental impact, such as the Emissions Trading Scheme for Maritime Transport and the upcoming EU Marine Fuel Regulation.
X-Press Feeders has signed agreements with several European ports to promote the shipping of environmentally friendly methanol fuel by ship, with Rotterdam being the first stop in this network.
The company plans to continue accepting more dual-fuel vessels in the future, furthering the shipping industry's decarbonization goals and expanding its green methanol-powered network across Europe.
